When winter blankets the Thuringian Forest in deep snow, the high-altitude crest around Masserberg (800 meters above sea level) transforms into a postcard-perfect winter wonderland. Seeking a spontaneous snowy weekend, four of us packed our skis for a three-day escape to Masserberg-Schnett.
Winter Arrival at Werrapark Resort
Driving up through the forest switchbacks from Ilmenau, the landscape suddenly turned powdered-sugar white with heavy snow-laden pines. We stayed at the Werrapark Resort Hotel Frankenblick, enjoying cozy evening meals, an indoor pool, and sauna amenities after frosty days outdoors.
Skiing at Skiarea Heubach
We spent our first day skiing at Skiarea Heubach, featuring a family-friendly red run, funpark features, and cozy slope-side restaurants serving fresh hot pancakes. The soft snow conditions made for relaxed, enjoyable turns.
Excursion to Veste Coburg & Historic Franconia
To give tired leg muscles a break, we took a short 30-minute excursion across the Bavarian border to the historic ducal town of Coburg in Upper Franconia. We explored the cobblestone Marktplatz, Ehrenburg Palace, and hiked up to the colossal fortress of Veste Coburg (one of Germany’s largest medieval castles, known as the ‘Crown of Franconia’), savoring warm apple strudel in the castle restaurant with views across the rolling hills.
Whether for cross-country touring along the Rennsteig, ice skating in Ilmenau, or exploring medieval castles, Masserberg is a delightful winter escape in Central Germany.
