Where?
Warnemünde is a picturesque former fishing village on Germany’s Baltic Sea coast and today forms the seaside district of the Hanseatic city of Rostock. Its broad sandy beach, sweeping seaside promenade, and historic 1897 lighthouse leave an indelible mark on everyone who visits. With its charming harbour, historic captain’s cottages, and lively canal (Alter Strom), Warnemünde invites you to take relaxing boat tours and strolls. The seaside resort is always worth a journey – and that was precisely why I spent four wonderful days here over New Year’s Eve (Silvester) with a group of 14 family members and friends, staying together in the local youth hostel.
What We Did & Discovered
The kilometre-long beach promenade leads directly into the beating heart of Warnemünde. We walked this scenic coastal path multiple times a day – whether to drop into a cosy maritime tavern, grab a hot drink, or simply breathe in the crisp sea air. The harbour area offers plenty of small boutiques, fishmongers, and authentic restaurants. Having a warm, fresh fish sandwich (Fischbrötchen) for lunch followed by an extensive beach walk is an absolute must-do ritual here.
The steep cliffs (Steilküste Stoltera) are just a short hike away and are a magnet for nature lovers, walkers, and anglers alike. Whether you are on the hunt for seashells, fossilised stones with natural holes (called Hühnergötter or Adder stones), Baltic amber, or just fresh sea breezes – with a bit of patience, the Baltic shoreline always rewards you. I personally took home two beautiful Adder stones as keepsakes. On earlier trips after autumn storms, I even managed to find genuine Baltic amber washed ashore.
The Youth Hostel & Our Themed New Year Celebration
Our accommodation at the DJH Youth Hostel Warnemünde was fantastic – particularly considering it was “just” a youth hostel. Every private room had its own ensuite bathroom, breakfast was abundant every morning, and hearty warm dinners were served in the evenings. Our New Year’s Eve celebration was held under a creative fairy-tale motto based on Sleeping Beauty: we dressed up as kings, queens, princesses, fairies, guards, cooks, and court jesters, sharing tons of laughs together.
A festive dinner buffet and music kept everyone dancing late into the night. Right before midnight, we walked down to the beach with torches to watch the spectacular fireworks explode across the open Baltic Sea from the sand dunes. Winter, crisp sunshine, broad sand, and rolling waves – the Baltic coast has a captivating magic even in deep winter, and I know I will return here many times.
