London is one of the world’s most dynamic global capitals, brimming with royal pageantry, cutting-edge street markets, historic riverside landmarks, and vibrant nightlife. In March, I hopped on a weekend flight to London to visit my best friend who was completing an international internship abroad.

Arriving & Navigating with the Oyster Card

I flew into London Stansted Airport and caught the express coach over to Heathrow where my friend picked me up. We based ourselves in Feltham in southwest London, commuting into central London each morning by suburban rail and the London Underground (the Tube).

For getting around London, an Oyster card (or contactless debit/credit card) is the best and cheapest method. The Underground network is remarkably clear, fast, and intuitive – with distinct color-coded lines and clear direction boards across all stations.

Shopping in Central London & Camden Market

Our weekend started with retail therapy along Oxford Street, followed by an afternoon in the legendary Camden Market. Set around historic canal locks, Camden offers an eclectic bohemian mix of vintage clothing, handmade jewelry, alternative music, and delicious global street food stalls.

Sightseeing Cruise, Tower Bridge & Big Ben

The following day was devoted to sightseeing. We combined a classic double-decker bus tour with a scenic sightseeing cruise down the River Thames, gliding right beneath the colossal suspension towers of Tower Bridge and past the historic stone fortress of the Tower of London.

Our walking circuit brought us to the London Eye on the South Bank, the Houses of Parliament and the soaring clock tower of Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, and Buckingham Palace to watch the King’s Guard.

We rounded off the trip with a visit to Madame Tussauds wax museum and an interactive 4D cinema experience. Over three full days, London treated us to continuous blue skies and radiant sunshine – completely defying the city’s rainy reputation!

🇬🇧 Essential Travel Tips for Your London City Break

London is an extraordinary walking city. Here are a few must-haves for an effortless trip:

  • UK Travel Adapter (Type G): British 3-pin plugs are unique. A UK Travel Adapter with USB fast charging is vital in hotels and Airbnb rentals.
  • Contactless / Smartphone Payment: You do not need to buy paper transit tickets – simply tap in and out at Tube gates with your smartphone or contactless payment card.
  • Comfortable City Trainers: Walking between Tube stations, museums, and along the South Bank easily totals 10 to 15 miles a day. Cushioning is everything!
