The Emerald Isle – famous for its rolling green hills, dramatic Atlantic sea cliffs, historic monastic ruins, and legendary pub hospitality. In May, my travel friend and I took advantage of affordable flights from Berlin to Dublin for a whirlwind adventure across Ireland.

Dublin City Exploration on Foot

We stayed in central Dublin at Ashfield House Hostel just off O’Connell Street. Dublin is wonderfully walkable, making tour buses unnecessary if you enjoy strolling on foot.

Our self-guided walking route began at historic Trinity College and the Long Room of the Old Library to view the illuminated 9th-century manuscript, the Book of Kells. From there, we strolled along the River Liffey past the Custom House and Four Courts, before visiting Christ Church Cathedral and St. Patrick’s Cathedral with its flower-filled public park.

In the afternoon, a short suburban train ride brought us to the seaside village of Howth. Walking along the windy cliff path overlooking Dublin Bay, surrounded by bright yellow blooming gorse bushes, was the perfect breath of fresh Atlantic air, followed by traditional fish and chips and a pint of Guinness in a warm Dublin pub.

The Cliffs of Moher & The Wild Atlantic Coast

On our second day, we joined a day excursion across the island to County Clare and the Cliffs of Moher. Rising dramatically up to 214 meters (702 feet) above the churning Atlantic Ocean, the cliffs stretch for 14 kilometers of breathtaking coastal scenery.

We continued through the surreal limestone karst landscape of The Burren, where ancient stone walls crisscross weathered limestone terraces, visiting the 12th-century ruins and Celtic crosses of Corcomroe Abbey, and picturesque Dunguaire Castle in Kinvara.

Wicklow Mountains & Glendalough Monastery

Our third day explored the scenic Wicklow Mountains National Park south of Dublin – famous as the filming backdrop for Braveheart and P.S. I Love You. Deep within the valley lies the early medieval monastic settlement of Glendalough, founded by St. Kevin in the 6th century, featuring a remarkably preserved 30-meter stone round tower and ancient Celtic high crosses.

With its welcoming locals, rich folklore, and dramatic coastal landscapes, Ireland captured our hearts. An unforgettable Celtic journey!

☘️ Practical Tips & Packing Essentials for Ireland

Ireland’s coastal cliffs and green glens are magical, but the Atlantic weather requires versatile preparation:

  • UK / Ireland Travel Adapter (Type G): Ireland uses the three-pin rectangular Type G plug. A compact UK & Ireland Travel Adapter with USB ports is essential for hostels and B&Bs.
  • Windproof Compact Umbrella & Rain Jacket: Atlantic gusts at the Cliffs of Moher destroy flimsy umbrellas. A Stormproof Wind-Resistant Travel Umbrella and a breathable waterproof jacket are essential daily gear.
  • Grippy Walking Shoes: Cliff paths and wet grass can be slippery – bring shoes with sturdy traction.
